What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment which works through your musculoskeletal system. Our experts will take a very thorough case history, which will dig deep to discover why you are in pain and what the cause could be. They may also undertake relevant clinical examinations to determine the underlying cause of your pain or symptoms and whether it’s safe to treat you.

This diagnosis is then followed by an effective and efficient treatment that is tailored to achieve the best results for you. If any concerns are raised during the case history and examination, you may be referred back to your GP or for a treatment approach.

What should I expect on my first session?

During your first consultation, we will take a full case history, including past accidents, surgery and medication. Your osteopath will then examine you and ask you to perform a series of simple movements within your pain-free range. This enables us to assess your posture, mobility, muscle strength and symmetry. We may ask you to remove some outer layers of clothing if the material is heavy or restrictive to allow us to palpate more accurately. Jeans, for example, may change the way a knee moves due to the dense denim material compressing the joint.

If appropriate, you will be asked to lie down on the plinth, where the movements may be repeated but this time by the osteopath. This can help to determine the cause of your pain. Through gentle touch (palpation), we will locate the problem area before developing a treatment plan.

What will my patient journey look like?

Everyone's journey is different. We will want to assess how you respond over time to treatment, which will help us adapt your care plan as well as determine whether additional help or support is required. We will also provide advice on avoiding future injury, maintaining a good posture, exercising and eating healthily.

Osteopathy should not be viewed as just a one-off treatment for pain, but as an MOT for muscles and joints! Many of our patients keep up with regular appointments, and find it to be immensely beneficial in terms of their mobility and ability to lead an active lifestyle.
